    i have never liked the box of knives

    i had a terrible case of the past
    i didn’t know how to get it off

    your machete
    and you sliced through the vines that wrapped around me
    and you said
    i don’t know what i’m doing
    so i’ll just keep on cutting
    it’s worth a little blood to get your arms free

    it’s just like anti matter
    it’s dumbo’s magic feather

    PS: Punctuation and capitalization have been left as in the original. I’m still working on the rhyme (for example love that was safe has been changed to love that wasn’t dangerous so it rhymes). Improvements, feedback, suggestions are all welcome (use the comments below).

    Am I a cat? [poem]

    Am I a cat?

    I bask in the sun,
    I lay in your lap,
    I find my own way,
    I don’t like other cats.

     

    You find my white hair
    On anything black.
    I’m fastidiously clean
    And I love to nap.

     

    Am I happy to see you?
    Without a single doubt.
    It’s not like I chase you
    But I’m always around.

     

    I’m sure that you know
    What I do at night.
    I come back to you
    I’m glad it’s enough.

     

    When I climb to bed,
    I claim the warmest spot.
    Those arms on my chest
    Make me wanna purr.

     

    Except when they don’t.
    I’m up, I’m awake.
    I jump up and down.
    Get outta my way!

     

    I’d like to be more human
    In other people’s eyes.
    They see me as a mutant
    I see through all their lies.

     

    I might be a bit feline
    But I’m not your cat
    I don’t own you either
    You can hold on to that.

    Body, remember

    My friend César sends me a chain of poems: OK. I chose one that his gorgeous wife discovered for me: Body, remember, by Kavafis. Today, with a hat-tip to Kirie Yanis Varoufakis.

    Σώμα, θυμήσου όχι μόνο το πόσο αγαπήθηκες,
    όχι μονάχα τα κρεββάτια όπου πλάγιασες,
    αλλά κ’ εκείνες τες επιθυμίες που για σένα
    γυάλιζαν μες στα μάτια φανερά,
    κ’ ετρέμανε μες στη φωνή — και κάποιο
    τυχαίον εμπόδιο τες ματαίωσε.
    Τώρα που είναι όλα πια μέσα στο παρελθόν,
    μοιάζει σχεδόν και στες επιθυμίες
    εκείνες σαν να δόθηκες — πώς γυάλιζαν,
    θυμήσου, μες στα μάτια που σε κύτταζαν·
    πώς έτρεμαν μες στη φωνή, για σε, θυμήσου, σώμα.

    Body, remember not just how much you were loved,
    not simply those beds on which you have lain,
    but also the desire for you that shone
    plainly in the eyes that gazed at you,
    and quavered in the voice for you, though
    by some chance obstacle was finally forestalled.
    Now that everything is finally in the past,
    it seems as though you did yield to those desires ―
    how they shone, remember, in the eyes that gazed at you,
    how they quavered in the voice for you ― body, remember.

    Recuerda, cuerpo

    César me manda una cadena de poemas: vale. Elijo uno que me descubrió su bella esposa María: Recuerda, cuerpo, de Kavafis. Hoy dedicado a Kirie Yanis Varoufakis.

    Σώμα, θυμήσου όχι μόνο το πόσο αγαπήθηκες,

    Cuerpo, recuerda no solo cuánto fuiste amado,
    no solo las camas en las que te acostaste,
    sino también aquellos deseos que por ti
    claramente brillaban en los ojos,
    y temblaban en la voz; y algún
    obstáculo casual los hizo vanos.
    Ahora que todo está ya en el pasado,
    parece casi como si a los deseos
    aquellos te hubieses entregado; cómo brillaban,
    recuerda, en los ojos que te miraban;
    cómo temblaban en la voz, por ti: recuerda, cuerpo.
